Mindfulness is a practice found in a number of religious and nonreligious traditions. Generally speaking, religious and spiritual institutions in the East popularized mindfulness. Its popularity in the West can be traced to specific individuals and secular institutions. Some commentators assert that mindfulness also has Jewish, Christian, and Islamic roots.
