Aim

Debriefing is a dialogue between two or more people who have been involved in a critical situation/incident. Its goals are to provide an opportunity to discuss the actions and individual thought processes that occurred in order to encourage reflection and determine opportunities for improvement and support at the individual, team, and system level. Debriefing essentially assists staff to explore what went well and what could be done differently. This workshop provides an overview regarding the benefits of debriefing alongside identifying fundamental skills in relation to the debriefing process. Note: This workshop does not teach you to become a qualified debriefer.

Overview and Learning Intentions

• Explain the application of the debriefing process
• Describe the importance of psychological safety for each member in the debriefing process
• Demonstrate the use of the ‘COPING’ and the ‘PLUS-DELTA’ methods for debriefing in relation to various scenarios
• Discuss the importance of the ‘right person’, the ‘right timing’ and the ‘right follow up’ in relation to the debriefing process
