What IS life coaching?

Life coaching is a process in which we identify goals you wish to achieve in life; such as getting a new job, moving houses, getting a big promotion, or any other big adventures you wish to go on in life.

The life coach’s role in the process is based around accountability to those goals. When feeling stuck, helping you gain new skills to overcome the hurdle.

What's the difference between life coaching and counselling?

There are quite a lot of overlapping skills between life coaching and counselling but the pathway looks a bit different.

In life coaching, the main objective is to help someone who is already relatively stable to enhance their life or “take it to the next level”, so to speak.

Whereas the main objective for counselling is wellness. Counselling spends a lot of time working through past events to keep them from hindering their current lives.

Do I need counselling or do I need life coaching?

Here’s a quick checklist for you to examine your current life situation to determine the service more appropriate:

  • Do you have a currently diagnosed mental health disorder (depression/anxiety) that you are seeking treatment for?
    • If yes, you are better in counselling
  • Would you consider yourself a functioning person looking to enhance your life through the accomplishment of an activity or event, such as a career change, losing weight, or lifestyle change, and would like support with accountability for that change?
    • If yes, then life coaching is for you!

Why does it matter?

Counsellors are trained, registered professionals with clinically proven experience verified by an overarching body such as the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) in New Zealand and the American Counseling Association (ACA) in the United States.

To keep accreditation, each professional is required to undergo regular supervision and well as keep up to date with regular seminars and trainings. Counsellors also keep to a body of ethics that determine what behaviour is considered appropriate and clinical.
